The Marva Hind's Story

Marva "Wendy" (Cumberbatch) Hinds departed this life on December 30, 2021, at 69. On April 17, 1952, she was born in St. Michael, Barbados, West Indies. She was the first of three children born to Keith and (the late) Patricia Cumberbatch. Later, she followed her brothers Jeffrey and Colvin. Wendy was overprotective of her younger brothers and cherished the moments she shared with them.
At the age of 17, Wendy, as she was affectionately called, joined her mother in America. She attended Fair Lawn High School and blazed trails by being the only Black student in her class of about 660 students. After high school, Wendy earned her bachelor's degree from William Paterson College and her master's degree from Trenton State College. While at William Paterson, she pledged with the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 1973. There she forged lifelong friendships. She was a proud member of the Paterson Alumnae Chapter and was known as a straight shooter among her sisterhood. Up until her untimely death, she honored her commitment to her sorority by participating in her final virtual workshop while undergoing dialysis treatment. "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me," from Philippians 4:13 (KJV) was the scripture she lived by.
Marva or Mrs. Hinds, as called in professional settings, worked for the Paterson Board of Education for 26 years and two months until her retirement in June 2021. She was a guidance counselor on paper but a second mother to many in spirit. She always had sound advice, a listening ear, a stern look, and most times, a snack for her students. In the early years, Mrs. Hinds and her husband, Samuel, opened their home to some students as a place of refuge. She would even babysit some of her students' babies, and her Princess Marcia was all too happy to assist!
Her love for the youth, however, did not end at work. She also cared for the youth at church. As a member of Paterson's 1st Seventh Day Adventist Church, "Sis. Hinds" helped conduct the Youth Forum Program Vacation Bible School and even oversaw some church plays. Her love for children and the Lord was a source of comfort and joy. That was evident, more recently, by her involvement with the 777 Prayer & Health Ministries, Inc. during the pandemic. After being introduced to this prayer and Health ministries by her sister-in-law Shirley Bruce, Sis. Hinds became heavily involved. She was instrumental in helping Pastor Desmond Haye and his team accomplish several goals, including raising funds for the Children of Uganda project, the weekly concert series, and helping countless students pay their tuition and finish their academic degrees.
No matter how exhausted she was from chemotherapy and dialysis, she enjoyed spending quality time with her greatest blessings-- Jaime Sr. (her "twin"), Marcia (her "Princess"), and her precious gems, her grandchildren.
Yes, our dear Wendy had a lot going on medically, but God was the source of her strength! Through it all, she trusted in Him. She was the go-to person if you needed something. If she could not do it herself, she knew someone who could! Like her mother, Pat, she was a selfless person and always willing to help others – be it her children, grandchildren, family, friends, students, or a stranger. On the morning of December 30, 2021, one of her final selfless acts was to uplift her family and friends in prayer on the prayer line.
Marva was predeceased by her mother, Patricia Cumberbatch.Marva is survived by her husband, Samuel Hinds; two children: Jaime Sr. and Marcia Hinds; grandchildren: Ky'marei, Jaime Jr., Ja'lisa, Promise Hinds and William Lambert Jr.; father: Keith Cumberbatch; brothers: Jeffrey and Colvin Cumberbatch; and a host of god-children, in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and church family. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone she interacted with as well as those she reached but never met.
